Better Tomorrows board to meet Sept. 4

The Better Tomorrows Board will be meeting on September 4th at the Kirkwood Vinton Center at 12:00 p.m.  Topics of discussion will be Funding Sub-committee Recommendations; Appointment Transition Plan Committee Members, Approval of Annual Report and Executive Summary. PEO Chapter MZ to meet Sept. 9

PEO Chapter MZ will meet Monday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 PM at the home of Pat DeKlotz assisted by Marilyn Mehlhaus.  Donna Sutton will present the program.  Meet at 1:00 to car pool.

Cover crops to be featured at September 12 SE Iowa Research Farm Field Day

Cover crops will be one of the topics featured at the fall field day at the Iowa State University Southeast Research Farm near Crawfordsville at 1:30 p.m. on September 12.  Many farmers are starting to consider using fall seeded cover crops in their crop rotations to improve soil quality and reduce soil erosion, according to Jim Fawcett, ISU Extension Field Agronomist.

Cover crop seeding Sept 10, near Iowa City

A demonstration of aerially seeding a rye cover crop into standing soybeans will be conducted on the Jim Meade farm west of Iowa City on September 10 at 5:00 p.m. Many farmers are starting to consider using fall seeded cover crops in their crop rotations to improve soil quality and reduce soil erosion, according to Jim Fawcett, ISU Extension Field Agronomist.

Meeting for VSHS D.C/NYC trip set for Aug. 24

There will be a parent/student meeting for anyone interested in going to Washington D.C. and New York City in April of 2014.  The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 29th in the L.M.C.  If you cannot attend but would like information, please email me at kelly.steffen@vscsd.org or your son/daughter can stop by my room for a packet of information.

AmeriCorps NCCC team plans Community Day with VPRD, Aug. 28

An AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team, Oak 3, is holding a Community Day with Vinton Parks and Recreation Department (VPRD) on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, where they will celebrate volunteerism. The NCCC team of nine from the Vinton campus is scraping and painting a gazebo, shelter and park benches. By inviting local residents to come out and participate, the community will benefit from this day of service by strengthening and beautifying their neighborhood.

VSHS FFA, Farm Bureau plan pre-game tailgate event Aug 30

 The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter, along with the Benton County Farm Bureau Federation, will be teaming up on Friday August 30, 2013 for a Tailgate Party! It will be held at north end of the high school parking lot beginning at 4:00 p.m. and the community is welcome to attend. The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking football team will host the Benton Bobcats on Karr Field later that evening.

Breast Cancer Survivors to meet Sept. 3

Breast Cancer Survivors will meet Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and conversation at Windsor Manor in the dining room. Free will donation for the meal. Anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer is welcome. For reservations please call Angie Tharp 472-2994 or Lisa Staab 472-5255.

Boomfest to include unique magic and music

Paul Imholte will play a variety of stringed instruments during Boomfest. Magician Keith West and musician Paul Imholte are among the entertainers lined up for Boomfest this Saturday. Imholte plays a variety of stringed instruments.
